What Happens When The Strong One Starts Falling Apart?

We love celebrating first responders for their strength. The courage to run toward danger. The ability to keep showing up, shift after shift, no matter what they've just walked through. The willingness to carry what most of us never have to.

But there is another side to that strength that we don't talk about nearly enough.

The things they don't always say out loud. The things their families end up carrying right alongside them. The moment when "I'm fine" becomes a whole lot easier to say than "I'm struggling."

That's really at the heart of Hatteras House.

If you haven't heard about the book yet, it follows a firefighter named Matt Garrison. He's spent his whole life running toward danger. He's strong. He's dependable. He's the guy everyone counts on, at the station and at home.

But here's the question this story asks, and I think it's one a lot of us need to sit with for a minute. What happens when the person who is supposed to be strong starts falling apart on the inside?

If the walls of Hatteras House could talk, there would be some secrets to tell. Matt is carrying things from his career that he honestly doesn't know how to talk about. And then a tragedy involving his own teenage daughter forces him to face something he's been trying very hard to avoid. That's really where this story begins.

There's romance in this book. There's family. There's faith, woven all through it. But at its core, Hatteras House is about resilience, strength, and determination. More than anything, it's a story about what happens when we finally stop pretending we're okay and let ourselves be honest about what actually hurts.

I think that's part of why this story has been so personal to me. After being part of the first responder world for more than 20 years, I have seen firsthand how much these men and women carry, and how much their families carry it right along with them. Writing this book was my chance to educate the community a little more and to give first responders and their families a safe place to land. A place where someone can turn the page and think, I get it. Or even better, I feel seen.

If you've ever been the strong one for everyone else, the one people count on to hold it together no matter what, I hope this story reminds you of something important. You don't have to carry everything alone.

Hatteras House is the first in a series of five books, and I'm already working on the next one, hoping to have it out in the next few months. In the meantime, I would love for you to pick up a copy and let me know what you think.

And this same heart behind Hatteras House carries right into what's coming next. In Weathering the Storm, Matt and Laura Garrison are still learning how to navigate life after Matt's PTSD diagnosis. Matt is working toward healing and rebuilding the trust trauma nearly destroyed, and Laura is carrying the emotional weight of loving someone still fighting invisible battles. Together they're discovering that healing isn't a straight path, it's a daily choice they have to keep making, together.

I'll be sharing more details soon, so keep an eye on your inbox.
